3 Things About Starting A Blog You Can Learn From Me

The Decision to Start A Blog

3 things i learned about starting a blogBlogging requires dedication, and I knew that going into it. I debated both sides of blogging before I started. Should I? Shouldn’t I? Let me make starting a blog easier for you by sharing my three main hesitations with starting a blog and how I overcame it.

I didn’t want to invest my time and money into starting a blog, only to trail off after getting into it. I knew I was going to have to go all in. So, the very first thing I did to prep myself was joining a blogging support group on facebook.

This has been one of the best things I could have done! I joined before I even really got started blogging. I followed along with other people’s questions and blogging and got some great tips to get me motivated and started. If you are even remotely thinking of starting a blog, that is the first thing I recommend.

Join a facebook support group!

What I learned from blogging

This is the one I am apart of:
Boss Girl Bloggers.  Laura is the admin and creator of the group. She is absolutely amazing. She promotes her blog (check it out here) which is packed full of blogging tips and tricks while also giving a lot of great advice and resources for you. The other members of the group are super helpful and supportive as well. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, get involved in the group and you will want to get your blog started right away!

Pin Everything Starting A Blog Related on Pinterest!

Another thing that has helped me get started on the right foot has been reading a lot of other blogs. Pinterest is a great resource for this. Have a question, Pinterest it!

I’ve been working on getting everything I have in sync and Pinterest has been my go-to for answers along with the support group on Facebook.

I have good momentum on this blog, and I don’t want to lose steam. I joined StumbleUpon, set up my social media accounts. Planned out my first bits of content. However, one of the struggles I have run into with my blog has been content. Topics are a dime a dozen. I don’t want to repeat content from other bloggers and I want my blog to be a resource for people. So, I am still working on building that.

Blog Content Topics

I have read over and over that one of the most important things I need to do to make my blog successful is good content. My first blog post was an easy about me and why I wanted to get blogging. Check it out here. However, what do I write about next? This has been another thing that Pinterest has helped with. There are a lot of pins about blog topics.

So, don’t be afraid to research, read, and learn as you go.

Research Before You Purchase

Finally, the third thing you can learn from my journey in starting a blog is that everything doesn’t have to cost you an arm and a leg to get it going. Marketing, as I learned from my master’s program, is a huge part of building a great business. Generally, you want to spend 5-10% of your budget on marketing. But, what if you don’t have a budget so you don’t have a percent to go toward it? Promoting your blog can come in small increments, $5 here and there. Also, don’t be afraid to use free resources like social media. I am still figuring out the promoting and increasing my blog traffic. Reach out to family and friends to become readers of your blog. They will want to support and encourage it during the process.

Another one of my hesitations with starting a blog was the startup cost of the site. WordPress.com, which everyone recommends WordPress, costs $30 month for the business account with all the features I wanted. That is over $300 a year! Yikes!

This is where Boss Girl Bloggers came in handy. I learned about self-hosting and SiteGround through the group. You sign up and install the WordPress plugin on SiteGround. If you already have a blog going, no worries, they do site transfers for free. The only thing you might lose is the photos. The benefits are huge though! It saved me over $25 a month for at least the first year! Plus, I am not restricted by the rules of wordpress.com that came along with having my site through them. I can monetize and post how I like when I like.

It definitely made my decision with starting the blog easier.

What tips helped you the most when you started something?

My Three Favorite Mascaras You Need To Try Now

My Three Favorite Mascaras You Need To Try Now

Why You Should Be Using These Mascaras!

I love the false lash look, even for everyday wear. Have you scrolled through Pinterest and seen what long lashes does to a face? You look sultry, sexy and appealing in every way. Something about it just draws you in and makes you stand out. My lashes aren’t short but they are not super long either.

Beauty Tip – to apply mascara go horizontal on your lashes then go vertical to give them the most definition.

The three mascaras that I am about to talk about I received samples of in my paid subscription to Ipsy and Birchbox. I’m providing links to purchase them, but they retail at your local stores or you can find them online.

Eyeko Black Magic Mascara

I got this Mascara in my Ipsy or Birchbox a few years ago and it quickly became my favorite!

It added such drama to my lashes. At the end of the day, I checked for smudging and wear surprised that there were no flakes and it appeared as voluminous as at the beginning of the day. It is definitely a mascara that you will want to go out in. Dramatically transforming ho-hum lashes to va-va-voom! I felt like it was as close to false lashes as I was going to get with a mascara.

To top it off it has a lot of benefits in this formula. You get conditioning via Keratin and Shea Butter. The brush lifts to add volume and curl to your lashes without the need of an eyelash curler. It is water-resistant and paraben-free.

You can get it here or from your favorite makeup retailers.

They’re Real by Benefit Cosmetics

These also are great for giving you that false lash looks with just mascara. It lengthens, curls, volumizes, lifts and separates the lashes for a going out kind of look. The best part of this mascara is the brush. I feel like I get more of my lashes than I do with other mascaras leading to a more defined and dramatic look. This mascara also stays on all day with no smudging or flaking.

The only con I’ve come across with this mascara is that it stays on almost too well. Even with make-up remover, I have a hard time removing all of it. Pro, It acts like a primer and mascara.

Smashbox X-Rated Mascara

This one has been my daily go-to for several months now. Smashbox X-Rated Mascara feels more like an everyday mascara than they’re real. It gives me all the drama I am looking for but doesn’t take as much work to get off as They’re Real mascara. I do love the eyeko mascara the best, but Smashbox and They’re Real are a close second favorite.

It claims to give you massive volume with a single layer to drama-city the more you layer it on. The brush helps separate your lashes and get coated with the formula to help create that build-able look.

It also does not flake or smudge and lasts all day long. Recommended application is to roll the brush-up and out working from the base to the end of the lashes.

Check out these three mascaras for yourself. You won’t be disappointed with the results of any of the three for volume, drama, and that false lash look. Check out my favorite sweater this winter and other blog posts here.

5 Tips You Need to Know When Beginning Fashion Illustration

5 Tips You Need to Know When Beginning Fashion Illustration

Introduction to the Basic Fashion Figure for Fashion Illustration

So you want to get started in Fashion Illustration? It looks pretty simple, you think you can do it, but you don’t know where to start? I’ve been doing this and learning a lot. So let’s discuss the five top tricks that have helped me out and can help get you ahead of the game.

Tip Number 1 – Create Movement with your Fashion Illustrations

You want to make sure your fashion figure pose isn’t stiff but has movement and flow. If you draw your fashion figure straight up and down it will come off as cold and robotic. Here are some of my very first fashion illustrations.

Fashion Illustration

I’m kind of embarrassed to show you these, but everyone has a starting point. This was mine. As you can see, they look stiff and the one on the right-hand side even looks like she is falling over slightly.

Here are some more recent sketches I’ve done with better movement:

So how do you create movement? On to tip number 2.

Tip 2 Study Fashion Magazines & Model Poses

You want to create movement. Angles, the body sways as you walk so you want to emulate that in your fashion sketches. Study fashion photos and see how the models are posing. Here are a few to give you an idea.

Follow the angles the model’s body makes and incorporate that into your drawings. Draw fashion illustrations of models walking the runway. The hips will go one way, while the shoulders go the other. I still have trouble getting this perfect, see my latest Instagram post for what I’m talking about.

Tip Number 3 – Have the Correct Materials

Trio blending copic markers

Having the correct materials can make your work 100 times easier. This one you can get away with not having the correct materials. However, I highly recommend investing in some good alcohol ink markers. The colors blend well when you are using them and create just the right blends you are wanting to create in clothing, hair, skin, etc. You can blend with watercolors and even the iPad pro. But, alcohol markers make it so easy!

Personally, I switch between the iPad pro procreate app and hand-drawn fashion illustrations with Copic markers. I started out with colored pencils and watercolors and started investing in copic markers. It took me six months to invest in them to get a good variety. The difference is huge. Just scroll through my instagram feed and you can see what a difference the materials seems to make.

Copic Markers, or really any alcohol ink markers, are super easy to blend and use. You don’t have to get a degree to use them. You can layer the lighter colors to make a darker shade or add a slightly different tone to create the folds and shades of the outfit. Yes, you can do this with watercolors but I have found that the watercolors were not as easy as a beginner as the copic markers are.

Tip Number 4 – Practicing, Practice, Practice

As with everything, you need to practice, practice, practice to get better. It still takes me several hours to complete a fashion illustration. You can do different practices to help your speed. I just haven’t invested the time in that yet. Since it takes me several hours to complete one, I usually only manage to do about 2 to 3 fashion illustrations a week. I am wanting to be able to do them quicker so I can do more in a week. I am just not there yet.

Still, doing 2 to 3 a week has gotten me a long way from my first to my latest. This is the difference from, my first, 7 months ago to yesterday:

Tip Number 5 – Study Other Peoples’ work

Studying other fashion illustrators’ works and components has been a huge help for me. Check out my post on my favorite fashion illustrators to follow on Instagram. I study different elements or features that they have in their drawings that I love most and try to recreate them in my own figures and fashion illustrations. Occasionally, the artists’ will even posts tips and tricks on what they do to create their illustrations. I always get excited to learn something new to help improve my work!

When I first started drawing fashion illustrations, I had a lot of difficulties drawing the eyes and other facial features. It took practicing and studying what others did to improve. I still have a long way to go. In the beginning, I loved sunglasses or glasses because I just could not draw the eyes to save my life!

Bonus Tip Number 6 – Take an online Fashion Illustration Class

There are a few places that you can take a quick fashion illustration class. Check out skillshare, youtube, or as I mentioned in tip number 5, Instagram stories. You never know what tip or trick will help improve your work the most! Also, don’t forget about pinterest as a huge resource. You can find fashion croquis to help you get started or different outfit ideas for incorporating into your fashion illustrations.

These are my top tips for learning and perfecting fashion illustration. There are so many other tips and tricks you can utilize. I’d love to hear some of your tips that have helped you the most. Comment on this post or get in touch with me via social media! I look forward to interacting and learning with you!

My Top Two Natural Beauty Hacks that I can’t Live Without

My Top Two Natural Beauty Hacks that I can’t Live Without

Natural Remedies for Common Beauty Ailments

Everyone has something they love. I’m all for beauty regiments and beauty supplies. There are two products that I use from natural products that I could never substitute anything for. That is Coconut Oil and Apple Cider Vinegar are two of the most underutilized natural beauty hacks for women today.

Everyone wants soft, shiny, silky hair and pay hundreds of dollars a year to achieve that. I’ve found that a $6 bottle of Coconut Oil is a great hair treatment to give you soft, smooth, and silky hair. Right from the cooking aisle!

In addition to that, women suffer all too often from yeast infections or other types of ph imbalance in their lady areas. Its a shame that we have to suffer so much!

I’ve discovered that Apple Cider Vinegar naturally balances your PH and heals things that might otherwise go south! Again, this is under $10 purchase!

Coconut Oil and Apple Cider Vinegar are my top two natural beauty hacks that I swear I will never go without again. Here is why:

1. Coconut Oil for Dry and Damaged Hair

Okay, so, my hair has always been dry. I’ve been dying it since I was 12 years old. Definitely chocking The ever loving life out of my hair. The good thing about it being dry is that I am able to style it in a variety of styles without it falling out of the clips or pins holding it in place. However, who wants to go around with dry hair that you can’t run your hands through and tangles easily? No One!

Coconut Oil Hair TreatmentSo, after pinteresting galore, I found someone recommending coconut oil treatments. I thought, “what the heck, I’ll give it a try.” I went to Wal Mart, where I buy most everything and checked out their beauty aisles for a hair conditioning treatment.

Why in the world does the coconut conditioning treatment consist of Coconut oil and lubricant? Also, it was this tiny bottle for God knows how much! I quickly maneuvered myself on over to the baking aisle and bought myself a nice bottle of Coconut oil for a fraction of the cost.. plus, no lubricant! So, I felt like I was wasting less money.

When I got home, I went to work. Putting some of the coconut oil into my hands, I warmed it by rubbing it together. I experimented a couple of different ways of heating it. I tried the microwave and found that it just was too much. So, I’ve stuck to just putting it in my hands and warming it then applying it to my dry and thirsty hair. It’s a process, but it gets the job done.

I started doing coconut oil treatments 6 years ago now. My hair is much softer. It grows a lot longer than it used too, and in general is much healthier! You have got to try it for yourself! You’ll be hooked!

How to apply the conditioning treatment

To do it just buy coconut oil from the cooking and baking aisle, as I mentioner. They do have coconut oil down the beauty aisle, but it has lubricant in it and you don’t need to pay for fillers. It will be a solid substance depending on the temperature of your house. Just put some on your hands and rub together then apply to hair.

I usually put a ton in my hair til it looks like a greasy mess. Then, you just let it sit for a while – 10 minutes, overnight, whatever. I have had good results with doing it right before a shower, but the best results are when I let it sit overnight. If you do them weekly or bi-weekly, the shorter times will be just as effective.

After I wash it out, shampooing and conditioning my hair like normal in the shower, my hair is silky smooth and soft!

Definitely a noticeable difference. You do need to do it regularly if you have dry hair like me. I try to do it at least once a week but really only end up doing it maybe once every month or so.

Here is a great coconut oil off of Amazon you can order: Garden of Life Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil – Unrefined Cold Pressed Coconut Oil for Hair, Skin, and Cooking, 14 Ounce

Or, just get your local store brand bottle of coconut oil off the baking aisle.

Here is an article on 77 other ways you can use coconut oil in your beauty and health regimen.

2. Apple Cider Vinegar

This is a miracle vinegar! Yes, it has a nasty smell but it is a lifesaver. I used to get yeast infections and bacterial infections all the time. I mean like every three months. Yuck!

I would go to the doctor, and they would prescribe me the antibiotic. The infection would go away and then come back a few months later. It was miserable and expensive. So, I started doing research. I added vitamins to my daily regimen and then found the ACV baths as a natural remedy.

Apple Cider Vinegar Bath

How to

You just run yourself a hot bath or warm, whatever, just run yourself a bath. Add a few glugs of Apple Cider Vinegar to your bath and soak for 30 minutes.

What it does is it balances your bodies natural PH and kills off any bad bacteria. If you have a smell down there, it will kill the germs and clear it right up!

I swear by this stuff. It’s amazing! I just use store brand Apple Cider Vinegar, nothing special. Or, here is a great one-off of Amazon you can order: Bragg USDA Gluten Free Organic Raw Apple Cider Vinegar, With the Mother 16 ounces

Try these two things out and let me know what you think. You will be surprised at the difference it makes in your hair and your nether regions.

Here is an article that tells you 30 more ways in depth to use Apple Cider Vinegar around the house. Both coconut oil and apple cider vinegar are so versatile. You will quickly wonder what you did without them!

Instagram Artists to Follow – The Best Modern Calligraphy and Fashion Illustration Artists that You won’t want to miss and how to find more.

The Discovery Of Amazing Artists on Instagram

The past six months to a year, I curated a wonderful collection of Instagram artists to follow on modern lettering, calligraphy, and fashion illustration. I have found the artists to follow through hashtags and other shout-outs or mentions from top Instagrams in each respective category. Daily I feel as though I stumble across someone else who inspires me to do better and try a different technique or material. Each artist I look at, I think, “Oh, I want to emulate this style of theirs or try this or that out.”

Instagram has definitely stepped up Its game, too, with helping you find amazing artists to follow through the following of specific hashtags instead of having to search and then peruse them. Now new posts I wouldn’t normally see are right in my feed! I can like and follow the artist. I can see if their post is the subject of their Instagram or if it was a one-off thing. I have added countless amazing artists to follow through that ability. To save you some time going through those hashtags though, here are my top 5 modern calligraphy and watercolor artists to follow, as well as my top 5 fashion illustration artists to follow on Instagram.

The Comfy Cardigan Sweater That Everyone Needs to Add to Their Wardrobe this Winter

The Comfy Cardigan Sweater That Everyone Needs to Add to Their Wardrobe this Winter

My Favorite Cardigan Styles

First of all, this Christmas I became obsessed with getting a comfy cardigan for myself. This came about because even though I have a ton of winter sweaters, I didn’t have one that comfy, casual and looked great! I have sweaters that are pullover hoodies, and work cardigans that are more formal. However, I did not have a casual cardigan for everyday wear.

This leads me to scour Pinterest pinning ideas for what I wanted it to look and feel like. Here are some of the sweaters I came across:

Cardigans and winter sweaters Best winter sweaters Abercrombie and Fitch

Click Images to be led to original source

These give you an idea of the style I was going for, and the feel; something cozy and something warm. So, I researched on Amazon and added a few cardigans to my wish list.

I did end up getting a great sweater from Amazon for Christmas, but it ended up not being exactly what I had expected. The material was comfortable and warm, but the fit was slightly off since I wasn’t able to try it on before I received it.

The Cardigan That Became My Winter Staple

The perfect one for me ended up being this one from target:

Mossimo Women's Open cardigan

Source: Mossimo Women’s Open Cardigan

It is my absolute favorite sweater I own right now. I practically wear it daily. It does stretch as I wear it, but a quick wash and dry does the trick to return it to the former size. The gray color is a nice combo match with a lot of my wardrobe, so I have no problems matching it with items. It also has beautiful detailing of stitches on both arms to differentiate itself from other cardigans. It is a style bloggers dream!

What is one of your favorite winter items you wear a lot? I know a lot of people’s go-to items are comfy sweatpants or comfy yoga pants. This has definitely become a staple cardigan for me. I’m already scouring Pinterest for my next staple item.

If you are interested in my staple art supplies this winter head on over to my post – Christmas Art Supply Haul and check out my recommendations there.

My Art Haul And The Difference Quality Art Supplies Makes

This is a little late for a Christmas haul, but it’s still January and better late than never to share my favorites art supplies from Christmas. Furthermore, I wanted to show you how it has made a world of difference getting quality art supplies in my final illustrations and art. I’ve been practicing calligraphy since November of 2016 and since July of 2017, I’ve been developing my fashion illustration skills.Fashion sketch

For years, I’ve loved the fashion sketches that I’ve run across on Pinterest and then I ran into Holly Nichols’ work. She is among my favorites and in another post I’ll go more into details of my favorite fashion illustrators and calligraphers.

Fashion Illustration

I decided to try my hand at fashion illustration. It seemed easy enough. Boy, was I wrong! Here are two of my first sketches:

They aren’t horrible. However, the illustrations lack movement and are very stiff. One of my problems when I started fashion sketching was  my supplies. I have watercolors, which many fashion artists use, but that didn’t seem to work well with the style I wanted to develop. After researching, I started investing in copic markers over the following several months. The first set I got was the skin tone set. It made a world of difference! You can see my progression on Instagram (@sharretteillustrations).

Copic Markers

Which brings me to my Christmas haul. I had a growing number of Copic markers, but they were for basic things like skin and hair. For Christmas, I got the Copic Ciao 24 color set and 2 blending trios.

Here are the links if you are interested in getting some too:
Copic Ciao Markers 24pc Basic Set
Copic Sketch Blending Trio Markers 3/Pkg-Set 1
Copic Marker Sketch Blending Trio Markers, SBT 4, 3-Pack

As a result, I can finally add some color to my fashion illustrations without wondering how I’m going to blend my watercolors to be the exact color I need. It’s been great and I feel like it has really elevated my abilities.

Pentel Brush Pen

In addition to these Copic markers, I also got some refills for my Pentel brush pen.

This has been my absolute favorite calligraphy brush pen. Most of all, it creates such a rich mark and the brush tip is easy to handle. Best of all, It is cost effective!

In conclusion, what are some of your favorite art supplies you got for Christmas?

If you are needing inspiration for some supplies, I definitely recommend the copic ciao set, Or really anything copic, and the pentel brush pen! This post contains affiliate links for the aforementioned products.

Bucket List – My Top Five for 2018

Bucket List – My Top Five for 2018

My Bucket List/Goals for the Coming Year

2017 was an exciting year for me. My Etsy shop picked up traction, my Instagram accounts have grown dramatically, and I went through a lot of personal growth both artistically and personally. As I look forward to 2018, I want to make a plan to grow this year but not be unrealistic. So I am making a top 5 bucket list of what I want to achieve.

Top 5 List

1. I’d like to hit 2500 followers on both my @dreamisawish_designs and @sharretteillustrations Instagram accounts.

Followers aren’t everything because I’ve noticed that the more followers I have, the less engagement I get. However, there would be a lot I could do in connection with this blog. That’s why I am putting that on my 2018 bucket list.

2. I’d like to see consistent growth in both my calligraphy and fashion illustrations skills.

At the end of the year, I’m going to redo one of the pieces I’ve done this month to compare the style and development. There is nothing like rewarding yourself for small things, and I feel like this would be a pleasant reward for the end of the year.

3. I’d like to be consistently posting to this blog.

My goal is to have at least 2 to 3 posts a week. It doesn’t seem like a lot, however, I have started blogs before and I quickly lose traction. I feel like with this blog I have a more focused topic to write about. That should help keep me motivated and writing consistently.

4. I want to overhaul my Etsy store.(You can see my shop here) Revamp some of my listings and add graphic design and fashion illustrations to the mix.

My Etsy store consists of calligraphy pieces and pieces targeted toward marketing and Senegence products. I want to, in essence, grow my line by diversifying. This isn’t challenging. The challenge would be to make the products marketable. Setting prices and getting people to buy isn’t as easy as listing and hoping someone stumbles upon it.

5. I want to put profit as my number five. However, instead, I feel like I should put something along the lines of generating meaningful content instead.

Everyone wants to profit from their work, and some do. I’d like to be one of those people. To do that, though, I want people to genuinely enjoy the content I’m producing; for the art to be pleasant and relevant and the content of the blog to be impactful instead of just words on the page.

So, that’s what my number five is: meaningful content.

In Conclusion

This is my top 5 bucket list for 2018. I hope to look back at this throughout the year and see development as I go. I’d love to hear what your bucket list is for 2018. Share it with me on social media or in the comment section.
